Faculty at Columbia University Protest in Defense of Student Demonstrators

Columbia University in New York City saw another protest yesterday at Hamilton Hall, but this time it was the faculty demonstrating against the treatment of their students by police and campus administrators, according to The Guardian. Professor Bassam Khawaja said that he was “horrified to see Columbia invite police onto our campus for the second time this month to arrest our students.” He continued, “Columbia has chosen escalation at every turn here with disastrous results.” He added: “The administration said that the protesters were a disruption and presented a safety risk, but it is the administration itself that has disrupted campus life by locking us out, relocating or postponing students’ exams, bringing in the police to arrest our students and invite the police to remain on campus for the next two weeks until graduation.”
