Luttwak Says NATO Troops Must Enter Ukraine To Prevent ‘Catastrophic Defeat’

April 8, 2024 (EIRNS)—Edward Luttwak, a British subject who is a founding member of the Committee on the Present Danger (frequently referred to as the “Committee to Blow Up the World") and an adviser over the years to numerous war-hawk Washington politicians, lived up to his reputation in an op-ed published on April 4 by the British online media outlet UnHerd. He argued that Ukraine is losing badly on the ground to Russian forces, and “the arithmetic of this is inescapable: NATO countries will soon have to send soldiers to Ukraine, or else accept catastrophic defeat.”

The military strategist added: “The British and French, along with the Nordic countries, are already quietly preparing to send troops—both small elite units and logistics and support personnel—who can remain far from the front.” But much more is needed, which requires a “momentous decision” by NATO’s European members. “If Europe cannot provide enough troops, Russia will prevail on the battlefield, and even if diplomacy successfully intervenes to avoid a complete debacle, Russian military power will have victoriously returned to central Europe,” he wrote. The United States can’t provide the troops, he argued, because they will be too tied up in an eyeball-to-eyeball showdown with China over Taiwan.

RT reported that “Luttwak suggested that by providing support troops for such tasks as troop training and repairing damaged equipment, NATO nations could free up more Ukrainians to serve on the front lines. `These NATO soldiers might never see combat, but they don’t have to in order to help Ukraine make the most of its own scarce manpower,’ he said.”
