Mayor deBlasio Proposes a Big Cut to NYPD Budget, Bowing to Demonstrators

New York City’s Democratic Mayor Bill deBlasio has proposed a $1 billion cut from the New York Police Department’s nearly $6 billion budget, Fox Business reported today. He made the proposal at a press conference at City Hall yesterday.

“My office presented to City Council a plan that would achieve the billion in savings for the NYPD and shift resources to young people, to communities in a way that would help address a lot of the underlying issues that we know are the cause of so many problems in our society,” he said. He also said the amount would come from labor savings. Layoffs could happen on October 1 as “the last resort.”

The NYPD reforms include canceling the July recruit class, major overtime reductions, and reduced contracts and non-personnel expenses. More than a half-billion dollars will be shifted for New York City Housing Authority and Parks youth recreation centers and for broadband expansion.
