Nine air strikes in Libya, conducted by “modern aircraft,” have hit the Al Watiya air base, ca. 130 km west of Tripoli and near the Tunisian border, where Turkey is building its military base.
According to the Libyan site, “Libya Akbhar,” the raids have “destroyed the control room of the Turkish military in Libya,” causing the deaths “of six Turkish officers, including a commander.” A tweet of the Turkish presidential office instead says that there were no victims. Since all versions agree that the raids were done by modern aircraft, there are three agencies that could be the authors, all of which possess Mirage and/or Rafale aircraft: 1. France 2. United Arab Emirates 3. Egypt.
According to one version, it could be French aircraft stationed in Mali. This would fit into recent developments, with France breaking with the NATO mission in the Mediterranean, asking for an investigation of an incident with the Turkish Navy, and Macron declaring NATO to be “brain dead.”
