Inauguration of New Genoa Bridge Sets Construction Record

The new Genoa bridge was solemnly inaugurated today and tomorrow it will be opened to transit. The new bridge was constructed in record time and is ready less than two years after the collapse of the old Morandi bridge and ten months after beginning of construction. Maybe the Chinese could have done better, but this is certainly a record in Western Europe.

The bridge is a highway viaduct in steel and concrete, 2047 m long and 45 m high, connecting the port of Genoa with the national highway network as well as the North, East and Western Europe highway system. The extraordinary enterprise was made possible by lifting beurocratic and environmental constraints that would otherwise stretch the enterprise over decades. Many demand now the extension of the “Genoa model” to all other infrastructure projects.

The date of August 3, 2020 is a happy coincidence with the date when Genoa’s most famous son, Cristoforo Colombo (Columbus) sailed for the mission that led him to discover the American continent, August 3, 1492.
