Yesterday, President Donald Trump signed an “Executive Order on Ensuring Essential Medicines, Medical Countermeasures, and Critical Inputs Are Made in the United States.” In the short term, it calls for U.S. agencies to procure medications and related products from American manufacturers if possible, splitting the order among multiple American manufacturers if they exist (to diversify production). In the longer term, the E.O. foresees creating an increase in production capabilities in the U.S., and greater oversight over imports to ensure that counterfeit drugs and components are not introduced into the supply chain.
