As of 4 p.m. Eastern Time, July 31, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States stood at 4,473,974, with a death toll of 151,499, according to figures posted by the CDC. Those numbers represented an increase of 68,042 new cases and 1,216 new deaths from the day before. The seven-day moving average of new cases is 64,212 per day. According to the CDC’s weekly summary for the week ending July 25, the positivity rate for the SARS-CoV-2 virus tests across the country was 8.7%, which was the same as the week before. Death certificate data for deaths attributed to pneumonia, influenza or COVID-19 increased during the period June 27 to July 11 for the first time since April. The percentage for the week ending July 18 was 12%. The percentage for the week ending July 25 was 8.6%, but that figure is expected to rise as more death certificates are processed.

Globally, the total number of COVID-19 cases stood at 17,752,874 on July 31, an increase of 289,315 from the day before. The total number of deaths was 682,393, an increase of 6,429, as reported by worldometers.info.
