Chaos Updates: Catch-and-Release Approach to Crime Allows for Additional Arson, While Tough Enforcement Can Achieve Results

In Oregon, a man was arrested Sunday afternoon, Sept. 13, after he was seen starting a fire at the side of a Portland freeway. He was booked into jail at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, released later that night, and returned to the scene. He set several additional fires and was re-arrested at 3:30 a.m.

Reality check: The man shot by police in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Sept. 13, as he charged them with a knife, had been arrested in 2019 for stabbing four people in a dispute. Illegal destruction taking place there under the guise of a “protest” was met with a more serious prosecutorial and judicial response than in Portland. Several people were arrested, charged with felonies, and are being held until trial, with bail set as high as $1 million.
