The U.K. has imposed sanctions on Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, as well as his son and six senior government officials, whom they claim are responsible for rigging the Aug. 9 presidential election and suppressing subsequent street protests. The sanctions announced Sept. 29, reports the Guardian include an asset freeze and travel ban imposed on Lukashenko. While certain member states of the European Union have imposed similar sanctions, the EU itself has been unable to impose them because of a veto by Cyprus, which has been demanding sanctions against Turkey.
