COVID-19 Spike in Europe Leads to New Measures

The returning wave of COVID-19 infections affecting most of Europe has led to the adoption of new measures to try to stop the spread. Most of the countries are now responding with more varied and customized approaches, rather than a general lockdown, such as curfews and extending the scope of mandatory mask-wearing.

The countries that lead in the number of infections are Spain, France and the U.K. But both Hungary and Poland broke their own record of daily new cases – one of whom was President Andrzej Duda. The government of Poland is expected to impose the highly restrictive “red zones” to the entire nation. “Red zones” mandate “wearing masks in all open public spaces, a ban on ceremonies and wedding parties, limits on number of customers in shops and passengers on public transport, shorter restaurant hours and closed gyms and swimming pools,” according to Progressive Farmer (https://dtnpf.com).

Reuters reports that the government of Spain is planning to declare a national state of emergency, and “will give regions, which decide on their own health matters, the powers to impose stricter restrictions on movement, including curfews. They can also put curbs on businesses and limit other activities such as gathering in groups inside and outside the home.”
