Mexican Energy Secretary Rocío Nahle told a Senate hearing on Oct. 26 that nuclear energy should be a component of Mexico’s energy mix, specifying that the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is now actively studying the possibility of building a small nuclear reactor in the state of Baja California, a peninsula which lacks electricity.
“Do we want nuclear energy? Yes, I am convinced of that. The CFE is carrying out an analysis of a microplant ‘’ in Baja California, and consulting the people of that state on the project, he told the Senators, several media reported. Nahle spoke of the efficiency of nuclear plants, both for constant energy supply and its safety. “The United States … has 40 [sic—actually 98] nuclear plants. It is continuous, safe, and efficient… It is time for nuclear energy to be discussed in Mexico. It was a subject that had been banned and it is a very beneficial [form of] energy.”
