The 20-year saga of Portugal’s high-speed rail connection to Madrid, Porto and Vigo is back on track after being shelved through lack of funds. The project has been represented by Infrastructure Minister Pedro Santos Nunes, for the National Program of Investments 2030.
The Portuguese government will now advance with the project which will cost EU4.5 billion and which in the first phase will be in the Iberian gauge in an adaptable form so that later it will be easy to switch to European gauge. It will enable trains to travel at 300 kph, slashing travel time from Lisbon to Porto to 75 minutes.
