Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met with Greece’s Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias yesterday on the sidelines of a conference in Slovakia. It was their first meeting since tensions began earlier this year. They will propose dates for exploratory talks and meetings for confidence-building measures in the coming days.
Dendias expressed the fact that the opening of Varosha beach in Northern Cyprus was hardly a confidence-building measure. Cyprus is a major ally of Greece where it has responsibilities under UN Security Council resolutions. Varosha was a leading resort city which had been sealed since Turkey’s invasion in 1974 as per relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Opening the beach and town to visitors violates those UNSC Resolutions.
