ECB’s Lagarde Says Digital Currency Planned Also for Retail

In a tweet Nov.1, ECB President Christine “Gaga” Lagarde said the ECB has launched a public consultation to test acceptance of a digital currency not only for inter-central banking operations but also for retail (consumer) use: “We’ve started exploring the possibility of launching a digital euro. As Europeans are increasingly turning to digital in the ways they spend, save and invest, we should be prepared to issue a digital euro, if needed.
