The Lawyers Defending American Democracy (LDAD), whose January 2019 founding appears to have been for no other reason than to participate in the coup against President Donald Trump, issued an open letter on Dec. 3 demanding that Trump’s attorneys be punished for making “false claims” about vote fraud during the Nov. 3 election, which they claim undermined “trust in the electoral system.” Under the headline “Call for Bar Condemnation and Investigation of Trump’s Campaign Lawyers for Subverting American Democracy,” this “non-partisan” group of 1,500 current and former attorneys, judges, local and state American Bar Association presidents, U.S. attorneys and law school professors, called for Trump’s attorneys to be sanctioned and subjected to disciplinary action for daring to allege vote fraud, as this, they claim, besmirches the legal profession and wastes the time and resources of the courts.
The open letter, one of several issued over the past two years, singles out Trump campaign attorneys Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, Joe diGenova and Victoria Toensing, demanding that “disciplinary authorities” of state and local bar associations condemn them and investigate their conduct in making “false and deceitful statements” in alleging vote fraud. It claims: “President Trump’s barrage of litigation is a pretext for a campaign to undermine public confidence in the outcome of the 2020 election, which inevitably will subvert constitutional democracy. Sadly, the President’s primary agents and enablers in this effort are lawyers, obligated by their oath and ethical rules to uphold the rule of law.”
