A severe earthquake, of 6.4 magnitude, hit Croatia yesterday, claiming seven lives as of this writing. While houses, public buildings, and hospitals were demolished by the earthquake, the Krsko nuclear reactor, situated in neighboring Slovenia at 80 km northwest of the epicenter, withstood the shock with flying colors. The Krsko plant was built by Westinghouse. It is a PWR and is older than Chernobyl.
A partial protection measure implemented in a small portion of the plant has been used to build media hysteria over the perceived nuclear danger.
