President Xi: China ‘Has Fought the Most Vigorous Battle in Human History Against Poverty’

“Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee has put poverty alleviation in a more prominent position, adopted significant measures with originality and specialty and fought the largest and most vigorous battle in human history against poverty,” President Xi Jinping told the Dec. 3rd meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPC Politburo, where the subject on the table was what China must do next to follow up on its victory in eradicating all absolute poverty, Xinhua reported.

“Through eight years of sustained work, China has lifted its entire population of rural impoverished residents under the current income standard out of poverty, and nearly 100 million poor people have shaken off poverty,” Xi stated. “The significant victory in poverty alleviation has provided a solid foundation for achieving the first centenary goal and greatly enhanced people’s sense of gain, happiness and safety. During the poverty alleviation efforts, the CPC Central Committee has upheld the concept of putting people first and taken ensuring a moderately prosperous society for the poor and people of all ethnic groups as the starting point and final goal.”

Some of the measures taken were reviewed, such as sending over 2.9 million public officials from the cities and town out to the poor villages, where, for example, they introduced new agriculture techniques and technologies to boost agricultural production and more than 50,000 new crop varieties. Similar kinds of help were provided for poor industrial areas.
