A China-U.S. Showdown in Last 10 Days of Trump Administration?

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian responded yesterday to the policy announced by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday for treating Taiwan de facto as a separate government, with the warning that “Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory,” and that the Chinese people “will never allow anyone or any force to stand in the way of national reunification or to meddle in China’s domestic affairs with Taiwan as a pretext…. We advise Mr. Pompeo and his likes to recognize the historical trend, stop manipulating Taiwan-related issues, stop retrogressive acts and stop going further down the wrong and dangerous path, otherwise they will be harshly punished by history.”

UK tabloid, the Expres headlined its story on that statement: “WW3 Fears EXPLODE after China Warns US to Stop Heading Down ‘Dangerous Path’ over Taiwan.”

The editorial published last night by China’s Global Times reflects how dangerous the situation has become; it warns that a military conflict over Taiwan in the next 10 days is possible.

“Pompeo’s team is working like a retreating army to knock down every building, then bury land mines, in a bid to prevent potential reconstruction. China must resolutely crack down on these saboteurs and take drastic measures against them before their destruction gravely impairs China’s core interests… Pompeo and his likes are frenzied and out of control… becoming dizzy with their hubris,” and the U.S. Establishment is just standing by to watch the fight, GT writes.
