“It is the international community’s shared responsibility to support Africa’s development. The African continent should become a stage for international cooperation, not an arena for major power rivalry,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian emphasized at Monday’s briefing.
Zhao had been asked to comment on Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s just-concluded visit to four African nations. He described how African development was the primary focus of the trip, which requires helping the African nations fight COVID-19. Among several measures discussed in that regard were the sending of more Chinese medical experts to Africa, establishing a mechanism for Chinese hospitals to pair up with African hospitals, and honoring China’s pledge to turn COVID-19 vaccines into a global public good. Suspension of debt service for African along with other G20 nations, was also discussed as part of fighting the pandemic, Zhao reported.
