Speaking at a Reuters forum on the future of the Eurozone, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said she hopes “it does not take more than five years“ to have a digital euro (DE), “but who knows where the continuous acceleration in the fintech world will lead us to.” A digital euro “is the answer to the strong demand from European citizens,” Lagarde said.
Obviously, achieving a digital currency is not a burning concern for European citizens saddled with poor economic prospects and Green assaults on productivity. On the contrary, there is widespread fear of being deprived of cash. DE supporters know this and in fact Lagarde insisted that a DE won’t replace cash.
