The State Department announced today the appointment of Robert Malley, who was the lead negotiator for the JCPOA, to be the U.S. Special Envoy for Iran. Malley “brings to the position a track record of success negotiating constraints on Iran’s nuclear program. The Secretary is confident he and his team will be able to do that once again,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price.
The Associated Press reported last night, when reporting Malley’s then impending appointment that the anti-Iran crowd “are aghast,” since Malley was the key architect of the 2015 nuclear deal that former President Donald Trump withdrew from. The hawks fear Biden wants to rejoin the Iran deal at any cost and may be willing to sacrifice the security of Israel and the Gulf Arab states in order to do so. The hawks regard Malley as less than fully supportive of Israel, AP reported.
