Jan.30 (EIRNS)—Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was in Turkey, Jan. 29, where he met with Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Among the topics discussed was a meeting of six nations, a proposed “3+3 format” of Azerbaijani President İlham Aliyev, with the support of Russian President Vladimir Putin, for the Caucasus region. The meeting would involve Turkey, Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia.
“Peace and stability in the south Caucasus are for the benefit of everyone, and normalization in this region will again especially benefit the countries of the region. But Armenia and the people of Armenia will benefit the most,” Cavusoglu told a press conference after his meeting with Zarif. “Therefore, we expect Armenia to take constructive steps in this direction.”
Zarif was in Turkey as part of a tour of the south Caucasus region with the aim of building this 3+3 format. Such a format would integrate Armenia into a cooperative relationship among all six countries, especially Azerbaijan, and could serve as a platform for implementation of reopening transportation links that had been severed for almost three decades during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
