China Responds Harshly to Canada's Parliament Resolution on ‘Genocide’ in Xinjiang

Chinese media and government officials have responded harshly to the resolution passed by Canada’s House of Commons denouncing “genocide” in Xinjiang and calling for boycotting the Beijing Olympics. Although passed unanimously, the non-binding resolution was not endorsed by the Trudeau cabinet, which didn’t want to go quite as far as the Parliament in making such accusations. Global Times, Xinhua, and other official Chinese spokespersons continue to hit the “lies and distortions” the Canadian resolution represents.

The spokesman for the foreign affairs committee of the National People’s Congress, You Wenze, strongly condemned the resolution, as a distortion of the facts and a “malicious provocation against the Chinese people,” Xinhua reported today. He went on to cite statistics on the impressive growth of Xinjiang’s Uighur population, and all of the educational and vocational resources available to it which have been so beneficial.
