Russian Cruiser Sails Close to Norway as US B-1 Bombers Arrive

Yesterday, four US Air Force B-1B bombers arrived at Norway’s Ørland Air Force Station, near Trondheim, after flying from their home base in Texas. Rome-based aviation blogger David Cenciotti reported in a blog post that Ørland is the home of a squadron of F-35 stealth fighters of the Norwegian air force and is a forward operating location for NATO’s E-3 AWACS aircraft.

The Russians haven’t issued any new statements on the deployment, but the Barents Observer reported yesterday that the Russian navy cruiser Marshall Ustinov sailed from the western Barents Sea into the Varanger fjord close to the maritime border with Norway. “Such sailing west of the Fishermen Peninsula is something we haven’t seen in recent times,” said Major Brynjar Stordal, spokesperson with Norway’s Joint Headquarters.
