The Feb. 7 Washington Post, often the voice of the intelligence agencies against President Donald Trump, unexpectedly devoted its entire Sunday editorial column to a single, long editorial claiming the “plausible” story that COVID-19 originated in the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).
This was a charge to which the Post gave no countenance while Trump’s Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was steadily shouting it and right-wing websites were publishing detailed detective stories about it. In fact, the rest of Silicon Valley (Amazon’s Jeff Bezos owns the Post) shut down some social media sites for posting these conservatives’ probe stories.
But with Biden in the White House, suddenly a very big Sunday editorial. Now, the Post demands an investigation — not only that the WHO team now in China be allowed free access to information (some of it patented) which has been classified by the Chinese government, but that the U.S. State Department produce to Congressional committees, the evidence Pompeo said the American government had. “China Is Sitting on the Answers” says a boldface subhead in the middle of the editorial. Throughout it, the main target, including with a picture in the editorial, is virologist and WIV research team leader Dr. Shi Zhengli.
