Bill Maher's Search for Shocking Material for Americans Reaches Out to the Reality of China

Bill Maher’s March 12th six-minute riff on how China is “eating our lunch": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DH4v6FnbvM — or, when reality is stranger, and usefully more shocking, than fiction.

Maher, who poses as politically incorrect, starts off with the politically correct invocations about the Chinese violating Hong Kong’s autonomy and treating the Uyghurs viciously — but all so that he can shock his audience on how silly the U.S. has become, compared to a serious nation such as China. In two generations, they have built 500 cities from scratch, have moved the population from poverty into the middle class, have developed 5G and pharmaceuticals. Their New Silk Road is the biggest infrastructure project in history (which Maher thinks is for “indebting large parts” of the world). They’ve built 40,000 km of high-speed rail. The U.S. sees a problem and proceeds to bullshit endlessly; the Chinese simply fix it. It took ten years in San Francisco to get two trolley car lines. The Chinese built a hospital with 4,000 rooms in Wuhan in ten days.
