Brazilians’ ‘Open Letter to Humanity’ Is a Manifesto of ‘Life Above All,’ Denouncing Bolsonaro's Coronavirus ‘Genocide’

A group of Brazilian intellectuals, artists, religious leaders and politicians have issued an “Open Letter to Humanity,” reportedly now signed by 100,000 people charging President Jair Bolsonaro with “genocide,” because of his criminal refusal to combat the coronavirus pandemic which has killed 268,370 Brazilians, and now threatens all of Ibero-America and the world as it spirals out of control. Just yesterday, the country registered a new record of daily deaths: 1,972 in a 24-hour period.

The March 5 document declares that “Brazil cries out for help. Brazilians committed to life are hostages to Jair Bolsonaro who occupies the presidency of Brazil together with a gang of fanatics motivated by irrational fascism.” Bolsonaro, it states, is a “man without humanity, who denies science, life, environmental protection and compassion. His hatred for [his fellow man] is the raison d’être of his exercising power.” The statement charges that the “intentional” collapse of the healthcare system, a slow vaccination campaign, and the absence of basic sanitation policies have created a perfect environment for virus mutations to flourish, “placing at risk neighboring countries and all of humanity. We watch in horror the systematic extermination of our people, especially our poor and indigenous.”
