Erdoğan, Putin Remotely Start 3rd Nuclear Reactor Construction

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, inaugurated the construction of a third nuclear reactor at the Akkuyu power plant in southern Turkey in a remotely held ceremony on March 10. The nuclear power station is being built by Rosatom and will supply 10 percent of Turkey’s electricity when completed. Located on the Mediterranean coast in Mersin province, its construction began in 2018.

Erdoğan said the first reactor would become operational in 2023, to coincide with the centennial of the modern Turkish state. A total of four reactors is planned.
