The slaughter last Saturday across Myanmar of demonstrators against the military junta, reached 140 dead, including six children, with an unknown number injured. The Army also began bombing the Karen militias, who attacked an Army base near the Thai border Saturday — the first serious ethnic militia attack in years. Karen refugees are fleeing to Thailand, but some reports say Thailand is sending them back. Governments in the region, including China, are being cautious, trying to resolve the disaster without more chaos. Some are calling on the junta to not wait a year for elections.

US Trade Representative Katherine Tai announced Monday that the Biden administration would “suspend all US trade engagement” with Myanmar that occurs under a 2013 bilateral trade agreement. This will not stop all trade, but further steps are expected.

On Wednesday there will be a closed UN Security Council meeting on the crisis.
