Vietnam identified its first case of COVID-19 on Jan. 23, 2020, and since then Vietnam has maintained the best record in the world for a country of its size: There have been 35 deaths to date, and only 2,637 total cases in the country. Vietnam has 97.8 million people and a population density of 817 persons per square mile. Their secret: First they test — a lot of testing — and they perform strict contact tracing back to the 5th circle of people that have been identified as carriers or cases. They quarantine people away from their families, using such facilities as universities that are shut down because of the pandemic. On top of testing, contact tracing, and quarantining, they have and will shut down the country once they see a potential spike coming.
