Xi Jinping, Angela Merkel, and Emmanuel Macron Meet in Summit

Upon invitation by French President Emmanuel Macron, Chinese President Xi Jinping, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Macron came together via video link today to discuss climate policy, along with other issues, such as EU–China economic relations. “Macron vowed to cooperate with China on fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, while Merkel expressed willingness to push forward the signing of the China-EU investment treaty,” Global Times reported.

Bloomberg wrote that the summit “may be seen as a snub to [climate aide John] Kerry while he is in China, especially since Xi hasn’t officially confirmed if he’ll attend Biden’s summit” on Earth Day.
