In the environment of growing tensions between the United States and China, Global Times published an interview today with retired U.S. diplomat and China expert Charles Freeman, to present a more sober view representing the thinking of “realists” in American policy-making circles.
Freeman was asked: “Washington’s China policy under the current administration seems to be a continuation of the previous one. How do you view such a continuation? What should China expect from Biden’s China policy?” To which he responded: “President Biden is locked into the Trump policies by his very shaky majority in Congress and by a staff who do not seem yet to have adjusted to the new realities of global politics. I do not expect change unless and until either the domestic balance of political power evolves or foreign policy failures make it unmistakably obvious that new approaches are necessary.”
