Three highly successful technology demonstration flights by the Mars helicopter, Ingenuity, suggest that it can take on more challenging tasks. The helicopter was originally designed as a technology demonstration, to test whether such a vehicle could fly in the thin atmosphere of Mars.
Now that that has been demonstrated, NASA wants to progress to more challenging operational missions, in which the task is to gather significant data in an operations demonstration phase.
