May 27, 2021(EIRNS) — The U.S. and Iran are offering conflicting accounts as to where the indirect talks on the restoration of the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) actually stand. Looming over the whole process, however, is the upcoming presidential election in Iran, set for June 18. It is not inconceivable that the election could result in a government that has little interest in restoring the JCPOA and would rather retain the advances that Iran has made in uranium enrichment in the three years since Donald Trump pulled the US out of the agreement. That remains to be seen, however.
