The latest CDC guidelines, stating that vaccinated people can stop wearing masks in most places, went into effect this week, and are a misguided capitulation to popular opinion and “COVID fatigue.” As various state governors, scientists, nurses associations, and others have noted, the obvious problem is that there is no way of knowing if people not wearing masks around you have actually been vaccinated or not. Given that a large proportion of anti-vaxers are also anti-maskers, and have no problem entirely ignoring the regulations or just lying outright – or purchasing phony proof of vaccination documents that are readily available — this is a formula for a new spike in contagion nationally.
