The inimitable Rep. Liz Cheney, who never met a war she didn’t like, spent 36 hours in the spotlight, trying to leverage herself into the leadership of a RINO (Republicans In Name Only) effort to sanitize political life of Donald Trump and his supporters. The occasion was her expected and unceremonious removal from her position as conference chair, the #3 Republican in the House of Representatives. Late in 2018 she had been crowned with the position, passing many Republican House members with much more seniority. In that post she was a bulwark against Trump’s efforts to end the permanent wars. On May 12, in a loud voice vote, she was stripped of her position.
On the House floor on the evening of May 11, Cheney had given a “rally to her cause” speech, using her Cheney-esque logic to paint Trump pretty much as a Communist Chinese agent: “Millions of Americans have been misled by the former President, they have heard only his words, but not the truth. As he continues to undermine our democratic process, sowing seeds of doubt about whether democracy really works at all…. Today, America is on the cusp of another Cold War, this time with Communist China. Attacks against our democratic process and the rule of law empower our adversaries and feed Communist propaganda that American democracy is a failure.”
