Why Is January 6 Footage Being Hidden?

Members of the press and counsel for defendants charged with crimes related to the January 6 event at the Capitol, continue to fight with the Capitol Police and the D.C. District Court for access to video footage of that day’s events.

Those charged with crimes have been denied access to full footage that could help demonstrate their innocence. And lawyers representing various media agencies wrote on World Press Freedom Day to the District Court, asking why footage entered as evidence in the cases is not publicly available.

In response to a Freedom of Information Act filing by Judicial Watch, the Capitol Police responded that the recordings are not “public records.”

Considering the many unanswered questions about the events of January 6, holding back the thousands of hours of video footage allows falsehoods to proliferate (such as the lies about attacks on Officer Sicknick) and hides in darkness other mysteries (who killed Ashli Babbitt?).
