Another World-Scale China Hydroelectric Project Is Online

The Baihetan Dam, on the Jinsha River (tributary of Yangtze River), has gone online. The project has a rated electrical capacity of 16,000 megawatts. Construction started four years ago, and It will be equipped with 16 hydro-generating units, each with a capacity of 1 MW, the largest single-unit capacity in the world.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday sent a letter to the station, offering his congratulations on the launch of operations of its first two generating units. As a major project in China’s west-east power transmission program, the hydropower station is the largest and most technically challenging hydropower project under construction in the current world, said Xi.
