Chinese Media Preview the Biden-Putin Summit: Washington Won’t Succeed in Driving a Wedge Between Russia and China

Chinese media also had extensive coverage of the Biden-Putin summit in the days leading up to the event, focused largely on two points: 1) that Washington’s intent of driving a wedge between China and Russia is “useless” and will fail; and 2) that European countries did not fully buy into Washington’s campaign against China and Russia.

Articles in both the Global Times and China Daily quote extensively from President Putin’s comments about Russia-China relations in his NBC interview. One Global Times piece was headlined: “Moscow, Beijing Reaffirm Close Ties before Putin-Biden Summit in Geneva; Attempts To Split China-Russia Relations ‘Useless, Hilarious’: Expert.” The article quoted Lü Xiang, a research fellow in U.S. studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences: “Biden knows that kind of attempt won’t work but he will try his best. This is the biggest goal that he wants to reach from the meeting with Putin.”

In his NBC interview, Putin said: “We have developed a strategic partnership relationship between Russia and China that previously had not been achieved in the history of our nations, a high level of trust and cooperation in all areas: in politics, in the economy, in the area of technology.”
