U.S. Vaccine Stockpile: 300 Million Doses All Dressed Up and Nowhere To Go

Around 11 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine are needed to cover about 70% of the world’s population. As of March, there were contracts for 9.6 billion doses to be produced and delivered, most of that in 2021. Since then, more production is being ramped up which would push that figure higher.

China is presently vaccinating 11 million people/day, or about 35% of the world’s total of 31 million/day, and they now have poked 11.5 billion arms in China. In four months, they are three- quarters of the way to their goal of inoculating 80% of their population. Meanwhile, the U.S. has been vaccinating about 0.5 million/day for a while now, and over eight months have poked around 340 million arms, fully vaccinating 49% of its population.
