Aug. 24m 2021 (EIRNS)—Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin yesterday used silly remarks made by Vice President Kamala Harris, during her visit to Shanghai, to make a broader point about the insanity of the U.S. and Western powers’ use of the term “rules-based order.” In provocative remarks in Shanghai, Harris had charged that China’s actions “continue to undermine the rules-based order and threaten the sovereignty of nations,” then went on to say that, of course, U.S. engagement in the Indo-Pacific is not directed against any one country, nor is it intended to tell nations to choose one nation over the other.
Asked about these statements during yesterday’s press briefing, Wang replied that “what is happening in Afghanistan clearly reveals the U.S. definition of `rules’ and `order.’. The US can arbitrarily launch military intervention in a country without shouldering the responsibility for the suffering of the people in the relevant country; it gets to decide when it wants to come and leave without consulting the international community, not even its allies; it can wantonly smear, suppress, coerce and bully other countries for the sake of `America First’ without paying any price. This is the kind of order that the U.S. wants. It always tries to defend its selfishness and bullying and hegemonic actions by citing `rules’ and `order’. But how many people would actually buy it?”
