European countries fear a refugee wave from Afghanistan. According to the Italian gossip site Dagospia, this is the motivation behind the G20 meeting on Afghanistan that Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, rotating chairman of the G20, is scrambling to organize.
According to the report, President Joe Biden has put two conditions on the G20 meeting: that the Europeans unite in support of the U.S. position, and that Draghi find out what the Russians and the Chinese want. Draghi spoke Russia’s President Putin on Aug. 19 and today is scheduled to speak to China’s President Xi Jinping. The report speculates that China will ask for economic counterparts, such as G5 and trade.
Furthermore, Draghi wants a meeting with a physical presence of the leaders, whereas Biden wants a virtual one.
A factor adding more confusion to the picture is that while the EU Commission wants to organize “humanitarian corridors'’ for Afghan refugees (this is a frequent cover for de facto foreign invasion), Austria, Hungary and Slovenia are against it. European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen threatens to have a majority vote (as opposed to unanimous agreement), but she must change rules in order to do that.
