With 8 million doses, the EU has reached only 4% of its promised 200 million vaccinations for export—a miserable record in light of European complaints about China’s “vaccination diplomacy.” Even in Europe itself, the EU is far behind with vaccinating its populations.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said July 30 that the bloc’s “insufficient” vaccine shipments to Africa and Ibero-America risked Europe’s losing influence to China. “China’s expansion in Africa and Latin America should concern us and should occupy us a great deal,” he said.
