Russian offersto cooperate with NATO on Afghanistan, made in the context of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, have been ignored, CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas reported during an online briefing yesterday. “As for cooperation with NATO, we expressed our readiness for the development of cooperation with NATO on all topical issues, threats, including on Afghanistan, rather long ago, also at the level of foreign ministers. Regrettably, no such readiness was demonstrated by NATO member states. That is why there is no sense in speaking about any steps,” he said, reported TASS. “But I still think that such dialogue and such cooperation would be in the interests of localizing possible threats coming from the situation in Afghanistan.”
Zas also expressed the hope that the Taliban will stand by their promise to reduce drug production and trafficking. “If these promises [to reduce drug trafficking] are honored now, we can only welcome this, of course. We hope that they will be followed through,” he said when asked about the Taliban’s pledge to stop the flow of drugs from the country.
