Texas Supreme Court Permits Arrest of Legislators Who Left Texas To Avoid Voting

Aug.13 (EIRNS)—Yesterday, the Texas Supreme Court overruled Harris County judges who had granted writs of habeas corpus that permitted Democratic House delegates time to argue for their right to leave the state to prevent the legislature from voting up election reform legislation. The ruling does not permit criminal arrest or incarceration of the delegates, but supports the right of the Texas Governor and state House of Representatives leadership to have them seized and returned to their legislative duties.
