World Food Program Executive Director David Beasley was in Islamabad over Aug. 25-26, meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan, and inspecting the repair of WFP planes, damaged in Kabul. The WFP not only distributes food aid, but operates a fleet of air carriers and vehicles to deliver all UN supplies and personnel around the world. Beasley tweeted Aug. 26 from the airport: “Our damaged plans from Kabul have been repaired, and the WFP is now ready to establish a humanitarian air bridge between Islamabad-Kabul and others destinations in Afghanistan. This will allow us to scale up to meet the needs of the Afghan people. Thank you.”
The Beasley video said that the Pakistan government has “really helped” put the planes back in service that were damaged in Kabul. In the video, he points to a passenger plane: “we are about to do a test flight from Islamabad to Kabul that will be an air bridge, which hopefully goes well.” The WFP has been involved in flying people out of Afghanistan, including UN personnel and others.
