Italian Lega leader Matteo Salvini caught political observers off-guard yesterday as he met China’s Ambassador to Rome Li Junhua, to discuss Afghanistan. Such a meeting was unexpected, as the Lega has been riding the China-bashing tiger in the last months. The Lega is part of the coalition supporting Draghi’s government and has cabinet ministers.
The embassy issued a short statement saying that “the two parties have agreed to explore further mutual knowledge and exchanges, promote Sino-Italian relations and mutually advantageous cooperation. They also exchanged views on Afghanistan and other international and regional issues of common interest.”
