Though Facing EU Sanctions, Poland Won't Back Down

The profound conflict between Poland and the EU on issues of sovereignty remains unsolved, but Poland does not intend to back down—even if confronted with a Commission freeze of up to €36 billion of announced EU funds for the Poles as part of the post-pandemic recovery package. Neither would Poland receive €148 million in funds for the fight against Covid-19.

“Some European institutions assume the right to decide on matters that have not been assigned to them,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki reasserted. “We will not act under the pressure of blackmail ... but we will of course talk about how to resolve the current disputes in dialogue.”
