French EU Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton told an interviewer with Germany’s Die Welt daily, that if cars were to run on electricity in the future and electricity were to replace fossil fuels in industry, the EU would have to double its electricity production by 2050, according to Commission calculations. “But today, 26% of electricity in Europe comes from nuclear power.... On this basis, to double electricity production by 2050, it’s simply not possible without nuclear power. … We can only achieve the goals of the European Green Deal with nuclear power.”
