President Joe Biden used his Jan. 11 speech in Atlanta, in which he promoted his voting rights legislation, to call for an end to the Senate filibuster rule. That rule requires 60 votes to end debate on legislation, and has long been one of numerous safeguards against a parliamentary-style dictatorship by the majority that the proponents of a British-style parliamentary system in the U.S. have called for. The Jan. 6, 2021 “Reichstag Fire” at the Capitol continues to be used as the justification for introducing all of the essentials of an unconstitutional parliamentary democracy in the U.S.
CNN reported that Biden “had previously expressed his support for making an exception to the filibuster rules in order to pass voting rights legislation but expressed more flexibility on Tuesday.” Biden stated: “I support changing the Senate rules, whichever way they need to be changed to prevent a minority of senators from blocking actions on voting rights.”
